The Psychotherapy Process:
My Philosophy:
The Psychotherapy process is about helping individuals and couples alleviate their emotional pain and relationship conflicts that may have built up over time. Therapy encourages and fosters the gaining of a better under-standing of the ways in which these negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviors may be influencing and limiting their lives. Sometimes, despite our best of intentions and efforts, these negative thoughts and feelings can create emotional distress, unhappiness, or a feeling of being "stuck" in repetitive cycles of difficulties that impact both our relationships and our careers.
The aim of therapy is to provide an alternative route towards achieving a greater sense of peace of mind and overall well being. In order to achieve this, psychotherapy relies on the formation of a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship, while simaltaneously encouraging both emotional growth and change. My belief is that therapy centers on creating a collaborative and interactive setting in which painful or troubling feelings, thoughts, memories, and issues may be re-examined, safely faced, and brought to a satisfactory resolution.
Sometimes, therapy may be brief and aimed at achieving very specific goals. Alternatively, therapy may require and benefit from a longer more in-indepth approach in order to achieve deeper more complex changes in the individual or couple.
My Approach to Therapy:
In the first few sessions, goals based on the particular issues and concerns that feel most pressing will be identified. For example, psychotherapy often begins by focusing on relieving specific troubling emotions or other prominent symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, anger, or hopelessness. Sometimes, negative or troubling behaviors, such as avoidance, procrastination or addictions, are the initial focus of treatment. From there, therapy may involve deeper work aimed at achieving a more fulfilling sense of oneself and greater satisfaction in your relationships.
Sessions are generally 45 to 50 minutes in length, and are usually at a minimum of once a week. However, sometimes, there may be a need to meet more frequently. An increase in the frequency of sessions may be arranged as needed at your request, or upon my recommendation.
During our first few meetings, we can both decide if I am the best person to help you achieve your therapy goals. If we find that your needs fall outside the scope of my practice, are better served by another therapist, or you would like a different form of treatment than the one I provide, I will make every effort to provide you with appropriate referrals to alternative resources.
